Radar is currently working on two new commissions with Jacqueline Donachie and Revital Cohen that have involved a dialogue between the artists and academics based within the Department of Sport and Exercise Science. Each of the new works will respond, in very different ways to research around improving human performance.

Jacqueline became interested in the testing and monitoring of athletes and decided to put herself through a rigorous testing programme. She made notes and documented the process and has subsequently spent a period in the studio undertaking a series of drawings. The outcomes of this period of research and development will be presented in November within a temporary mobile structure which documents her process. The structure will be dedicated to the cult of the ordinary in a place where excellence is paramount.

Matthew Cowan has been working with the Company of Ringers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, and has produced a new film of their meeting and practice which will accompany a performance. The ringers operate the 13 bells of the Cathedral in the Bell Ringer's Chamber high in the West Tower of the Cathedral. The film is a record of the ritual of the practice of the ringing of the cathedral bells, in space that has been dedicated to such activity for nearly four hundred years.

Alongside the film will be a new live performance involving the repetitive ritual of bell ringing, the mechanism of the bell ropes, and the artist's own take on the physicality of campanology.

The Labours will involve an extensive cast of volunteer performers who will enact sequences of movement and text in constellations throughout Lincoln, creating a human celestial map across the city.

Townley and Bradby

The Bowthorpe Experiment - Norfolk and Norwich Festival

13th – 15th May 2011

Townley and Brady developed an evening cycle tour designed to see the future of Norwich. The Townley and Bradby bike tour left daily from Chapelfield Gardens, with a portable bike-powered cinema packed into a bike trailer (from Magnificent Revolution). The tour passed through sites where in the past, residents, planners and activists have responded to the challenges of collective urban living. The evening’s outing culminated on the western edge of the city where a short film was projected onto the side of a building, creating both a public event and prophetic vision of the future.

FOLK VARIATIONS - Spring 2011

Folk Variations was a programme of four new artists’ commissions which explored how histories are both created and disseminated by and through people. Within individual and collective performances, the works told stories, provided behavioural examples and created historical reconstructions as a way of re-imaging our folk history.

Olivia Plender and Patrick Staff created a video work which utilises the film making process as collective and social activity. Their initial starting point involved bringing a group of participants to live together at a woodland site, as an exercise in communal living, or free school in the forest, involving group discussion and workshops.

Inspired by the stage direction from The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare – ‘Exit pursued by a bear’, The End explores endings and exits and continues an interest in the reenactment of real life events to investigate absence and loss. Developed at The Junction (Cambridge), Brighton Dome and Festival, New Art Exchange and Lakeside Arts Centre (Nottingham). Commissioned by Chester Performs. Nightjar

Nightjar took place in Cambridge in October 2009, presenting a series of temporary artworks and encounters between the hours of dusk and dawn. As the evenings drew in, Nightjar celebrated the city’s long hours of darkness with performances, installations and artist led walks.

Nightjar looks beyond the conventional gallery or theatre space, inhabiting the more unexpected sites of the city. Forgotten and overlooked spaces come alive with after-dark activities and familiar venues open their doors out of hours. The 2009 programme included new commissions alongside existing works adapted specifically for their location.

Each bench bears a plaque engraved with the words: Sit with us for a moment and remember. For one year, the public are invited to sit on the 2012 benches at exactly the same time - 12 O’clock midday for 20 minutes. Shortlisted for Artists taking the lead and supported by Arts Council England.

LAST WORDS Thank you for joining me on The Long and Winding Road. This is my car. This is my car history. On 17 May 2004 I embarked on a journey in a graffiti covered car from Nottingham to Liverpool. The car was packed with 365 mementoes wrapped in brown paper and string, tagged and logged. The journey lasts until 17 May 2009 when I will drive the car into the River Mersey. The journey started with a letter to my brother. The letter became a parcel. The parcel became a suitcase. The suitcase became a car. This is my car. This is my car history. This is the end of the road.

Linda Florence has installed a new intimate collection of suspended, retro standard and table lamps in the Mezzanine Bar of The Broadway Cinema and Media Centre in Nottingham. The lights are part of Light Night Nottingham and will be installed until the 2 March. The traditional shaped lamps have been gathered from Deptford market in south London near to Florence’s studio and redesigned with ornate hand printed wallpapers and dyed braiding and tassels creating lush clusters of light.

Parfyme - Backpack Factory

Parfyme (perfume) a four person art collective spread across Copenhagen, Bergen and New York is undertaking a 2 week residency at Loughborough University, 9 - 13 February 2009. Exploring issues around the ‘mobility of man power’ and equipped with a rucksack of apparatus, Parfyme will create a moving, touring factory which will collect rubbish and materials, create conversation between you and the artists, adjust to rules, overcome distrust and pass on information. Reminiscent of the old type of travelling salesman, carrying his product for the world to see, Parfyme’s project will take the ‘backpack’ as its starting point.

Item Store - Yvonne Droge Wendel

For Group Process, Yvonne Droge Wendel has created ‘Item Store’, a custom built unit that will present a variety of attractive objects.

The objects intend to be ‘something’ and ‘nothing’ at the same time. Their shape, colour and texture are almost identical and they reveal little about their function. Labels are attached to each item. The labels reveal the identity of the objects, providing a variety of possible interpretations, through a range of manuals, stories, images, histories or colour charts. The labels are exchangeable and arbitrarily attributed. New labels open new directions. The objects can be seen therefore as fashion items, toys, tools, instruments collector’s items, art objects or interior decoration items. All items are ready to be given a name, a context or a purpose with the input of the observer.

Yvonne Dröge Wendel is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. A central theme within her work is her personal obsession with collecting, making and restoring ‘things’. What is the most enriching experience between object and human subject? How do people and ‘things’ relate?

Award-winning writer and performance maker Michael Pinchbeck takes his parents on tour to recreate the post-show party where they met in 1970 after an amateur dramatic version of The Sound of Music. His mum was a nun. His Dad was a Nazi.

Mixing text from the past and present with movement to the real-time soundtrack of The Sound of Music, Michael Pinchbeck asks what is present and what is absent, what is professional and what is amateur. The Post Show Party Show receives its UK premiere after a sell-out performance at Springdance in Utrecht, Holland.

International artists are taking part in an amorous seance, trying to establish contact with Lord Byron, both as he was in his lifetime, and as he might be today. Their work is set in the intimate surroundings of Byron's ancestral home, placed amongst his own possessions and portraits.

Transmerge is a ritual that communicates an artistic desire to merge body and land for creative peaceful purposes without boundaries of ownership. Prehistorically land and rock art may have been used to define boundaries, and ownership of the land to certain ‘tribes’ and to indicate their beliefs and rituals. These boundaries of land and people continue today causing global and personal conflict between individuals. Love-Back was a project by conceptual artist Emily Beckmann,an umbrella title for several inter-related continuous projects that, although different in their approach and presentation, are based on similar principles.

The initial version of love-back began with a series of hand-made fabric shopping bags (the title "Love-Back" having deliberate similarities to the term "cash-back"). The shopping bags are assembled from the artist's personal collection of reclaimed handles, labels and vintage fabrics. Each bag is embellished with a hand-written love-percentage (a game popular with love-sick teenagers). In this case the love-percentages relate to the owner of the bag and the amount of love they allegedly feel for their supermarket.

In the case of the street-art performances, ("Love-Back UK") the calculations of love-percentages are directed toward places. Towns and Cities are methodically labelled or tagged with the name, Emily Beckmann.

Love-Back UK takes an inquisitive approach to feelings of national and regional pride. It focuses on interpretations of regional boundaries, (in both geographical and cultural terms). These notions highlight how a sense of place, or belonging, can affect our individual, and sometimes combined, senses of identity.

The project also draws on notions of heritage, and shared rights to public spaces. It would be fair to say that there is an element of tagging to this work. The term, "tagging", mainly used by graffiti artists, describes the practise of reclaiming areas of space.

LOVE CITY

How it works

Players send messages of love between Nottingham, Derby and Leicester to build a digital city in the palm of their hand. Active Ingredient have mapped all three cities and created a virtual city where locations interlock. For example, if you are at the train station in Derby and another player is at the train station in Leicester, you are both waiting at the train station in Love City. You can then send messages to each other. Points are scored by making a match with the player from another city. A menage a trois is made when three players from the three cities connect and a love child is born. Players will be rewarded for the creative content of their messages.

During the project Hughes produced post card style images of Nottingham and Leicester which were displayed on screens in all three cities.

Junkbox are Darren Van-Asten (Guitar/Vocals), John Devolle (Guitar) and Shoko Ariba (Drums). They paths originally crossed whilst studying art at college in London some 5 years ago, all had been in various bands and made music before so eventually they got together as a band themselves and have been playing together/writing stuff since July 2002. Their music is very simple, trashy, blues-based, with two guitars and drums, (no bass) they write short songs, that do the job.
